T-Mobile Expands 'Friday Night 5G Lights' with $8 Million in Prizes for Small-Town Schools
T-Mobile is significantly expanding its popular ‘Friday Night 5G Lights’ campaign, investing over $8 million in prizes for high schools across the United States. The initiative, now in its third season, aims to bolster community pride and provide crucial upgrades to local sports fields.
Football Legends Mahomes and Gronkowski Return as Champions
Returning as champions are football stars Patrick Mahomes and Rob Gronkowski, who will continue to promote the program. Last year, a town in Arkansas with a population of just 900 secured a $1 million sports field upgrade through the competition.

Expanded Prize Pool and Competition Structure
This year’s expanded program offers a diverse range of prizes, with over 1,000 schools receiving $5,000 through the weekly “5K Fridays” sweepstakes. Four schools with standout social media videos will earn a $5,000 Spotlight School prize. Forty finalist schools – ten from each of the West, East, Midwest, and South – will receive $25,000, alongside a T-Mobile-hosted Home Game Celebration. The four division champions will each take home $250,000, a Gronk Fitness gym (valued at approximately $90,000), and a $5,000 “The Big Deal” student leadership award. Furthermore, one “Fan Favorite” selected by T-Mobile employees will receive an additional $25,000, and the overall grand prize winner will be awarded a $1 million football field makeover.

How to Apply and Participate
Eligible high schools with populations under 150,000 in the U.S. can apply through September 18th by submitting a short essay explaining why their football field deserves an upgrade. The first 1,500 schools to enter will receive a rally kit, and all eligible applications are automatically entered into the weekly “5K Fridays” sweepstakes. Schools are encouraged to rally local support on X and Instagram, using campaign hashtags, which will also count as additional sweepstakes entries. Public voting will play a significant role, with fans able to cast one vote per day through the campaign website and T-Life app, and schools can earn bonus votes by participating in “Spirit Week” social media challenges.
T-Mobile’s Broader Community Investment
‘Friday Night 5G Lights’ is part of T-Mobile’s larger commitment to supporting rural and small-town communities. The carrier has invested over $22.8 million in community development projects across 49 states and Puerto Rico since launching its Hometown Grants program in 2021, funding initiatives ranging from playgrounds to digital learning centers. T-Mobile continues to prioritize strengthening relationships with these communities beyond just providing phone plans.
