Google Eyes Lock Screen Customization, Following Samsung's Lead

Google is reportedly exploring enhanced lock screen customization options for its Pixel devices, mirroring features already prevalent on SamsungGalaxy phones. While Pixel phones offer a selection of clock faces and style adjustments, Samsung’s Galaxy devices have long allowed third-party apps on the lock screen.

AI-Powered Clock Design

The latest Android Canary build (2608) includes a feature enabling users to design their own lock screen clocks using AI. Users input a prompt describing the desired clock style, and the AI generates suggestions. A gallery option allows users to reference images for clock design inspiration. Currently, the feature is experiencing issues, returning a “Service not connected” error, indicating it’s in early development.

Controlling Notification Icons

Another change spotted in the Canary build is the ability to control the visibility of notification icons in the status bar. Currently, Pixel phones display all notification icons. Google is exploring options to allow users to choose between ‘All,’ ‘Priority Only,’ or ‘None’ visibility settings. This aligns with features already available on Galaxy phones through the Good Lock app’s ClockFace module, offering extensive clock customization options.

Samsung’s Advantage

Samsung has long been recognized for its superior customization capabilities compared to Pixel devices. The ability to integrate third-party apps into the lock screen is a key differentiator. Google is now attempting to catch up, albeit with features still in the early stages of development.
