A passion for dissecting the complexities of technology led to a resourceful transformation of an aging Acer Aspire laptop. Samarveer Singh repurposed a 2019 laptop, no longer comfortable with Windows 11, into a functional home server.

Switching to Linux for Enhanced Performance

Instead of purchasing a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device or subscribing to cloud storage, Singh utilized existing hardware and installed Zorin OS Lite, a lightweight Linux distribution optimized for systems with limited resources. This change was crucial for unlocking the laptop’s potential.

Private File Synchronization with Local Network Transfer

The project’s core functionality includes a tool for synchronizing folders between devices without relying on external platforms like Google Drive or OneDrive. Files are transferred directly between connected devices, giving users complete control over their data storage.

Immich: A Private Photo and Video Management System

Immich, a platform mirroring Google Photos, allows users to manage and store photos and videos on their own server. It provides a similar experience to popular cloud services while maintaining data privacy.

Jellyfin: Creating a Home Netflix Experience

Finally, Jellyfin, an open-source media server, transforms the laptop into a personal streaming service. It functions similarly to Netflix or Plex, allowing users to access their own locally stored movies, series, and music.
