I'm thrilled that Samsung is finally axing the underwhelming 3X telephoto camera from the Galaxy S27 Ultra. This move has been a long time coming, as the short telephoto has consistently been the weakest link in Samsung's flagship camera systems.

For years, the 3X telephoto on Samsung's Ultra models has delivered subpar results, plagued by excessive color noise, artifacts, and a lack of sharpness. Despite the camera's resolution and sensor size, it never quite lived up to expectations. The 10MP resolution and f/2.4 aperture were woefully inadequate, and the sensor size actually decreased over time, from 1/3.24" to 1/3.94" in the S26 Ultra.

While some might argue that hardware isn't everything, the short telephoto's poor performance has been a constant thorn in Samsung's side. By removing it, the company is taking a Bold step towards creating a camera system that truly deserves the "Ultra" moniker.

The Galaxy S27 Ultra will likely achieve similar or better results thanks to its 200MP main camera, which can rely on in-sensor cropping for lossless zoom.
