T-Mobile CFO Dismisses Satellite-Backed Mobile Plans
T-Mobile’s Chief Financial Officer, Peter Osvaldik, recently stated that a fully satellite-backed mobile plan is unlikely to materialize, citing significant technical limitations.
Fundamental Challenges with Satellite Connectivity
Speaking at the Evercore Partners TMT Global Conference, Osvaldik addressed the feasibility of direct-to-device (D2D) satellite communication, similar to Starlink connecting directly to smartphones. He highlighted fundamental physical challenges, emphasizing that satellites aren’t suitable replacements for traditional cell towers.

Two Key Obstacles
Osvaldik identified two primary roadblocks: signal attenuation and beam capacity. Radio signals weaken drastically over long distances, and satellites can only serve a limited number of users simultaneously with a single beam. This makes them ideal for supplementing existing cell tower networks in remote areas, but not for replacing them entirely.

Distance and Signal Strength
The sheer distance – approximately 217 miles for a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite – presents a major hurdle. As a radio signal travels this vast expanse, its strength diminishes rapidly, making it incredibly difficult to transmit a usable signal from a satellite to a smartphone’s tiny antenna.
Competition from SpaceX
When questioned about potential competition from companies like SpaceX utilizing satellites instead of towers, Osvaldik firmly stated that such direct competition is unlikely. He acknowledged the evolving technological landscape but maintained the current limitations of satellite technology.
